TRY FACIAL OILS FOR GLOWING SKIN

Updated: Feb 2, 2022

Did you know Ancient Egyptians (also who invented makeup) used face oils to keep their skin glowing? Face Oils for glowing skin is no new secret.

WHAT ARE FACE OILS?

Face Oils for glowing skin is no new secret. Face oils are a skincare solution that is tailored to work with our skin’s natural oils to keep our skin balanced. They are packed with various nutrients and antioxidants.

Face oils are cheaper alternatives to high-end products sold in cosmetic stores. A 30 ml Rosehip oil which works wonders for me cost only about $10.00. An equivalent branded face oil sold by a higher-end cosmetic brand could cost $25 or more.

Face oils usually come in 30ml sealed glass ampules because they are highly concentrated. Only a small amount (approximately 5 drops) is needed to achieve the same results a moisturizer would require.

Moisturizers aren’t as potent as face oils because moisturizers can be mixed with a face oil, water and other ingredients, therefore, have less concentration of the oil. Examples of great face oils include Jojoba oil, Grapeseed oil, Rosehip oil, almond oil, Marula oil and so on.

HOW DO YOU USE FACE OILS?

Face oils work like serums. After cleansing and drying your face — take a few drops of oil into the palm of your hands or add a few drops onto the face and gently massage the oil all over your face and neck until it seeps into your skin. This must be done before using sunscreen.

I also like applying face oils before other heavier moisturizers. However, you can apply moisturizer first and then the face oil to lock in the hydration you get from your moisturizer. I prefer to put on a lighter serum, then face oil and then sunscreen. I don’t use a moisturizer.

WHY FACE OILS?

Face oils are all-natural — a natural source of vitamins and antioxidants. The number one benefit is radiant glowing skin. You won’t have to worry about how your skin would react because your skin already produces natural oils. It won’t be totally new to your skin.

MORE BENEFITS

  • anti-ageing

  • hydrating

  • skin-balancing

  • works as a protective barrier

  • also repairs the skin’s barrier

  • works as a makeup primer

  • shrinks enlarged pores

  • banishes zits

A CLOSER LOOKS AT THE BENEFITS

Facial oils are concentrated in omega fatty acids which are anti-inflammatories that help treat skin concerns like dryness, eczema, rosacea or acne. They have fat-soluble vitamins and antioxidants which help improve the skin’s ability to repair quickly.

As we know the outermost layers of skin are oil-based acting as a protective barrier. We get naturally oily to stay safe from germs and to stay hydrated. However, external factors like the weather can affect the skin’s natural ability to do this by causing the skin to become dull, dehydrated, unevenly textured, sensitive, reactive, reddened etc

Facial oils keep the skin healthy because they help restore the skin’s natural oil content. They help form a temporary barrier but also feed the skin with nutrients.

WHICH FACE OIL SHOULD I USE?

It doesn’t matter which face oil you choose because they all have similar benefits. However, since not all face oils are the same do your research and pick one that fits what you’re skin needs.

Coconut oil is quite popular because it works for various skin types but it's thick in texture and can be greasy compared to other alternatives like Rosehip Oil. My personal favourite is Rosehip Oil. I use it every morning and night. It helps brighten my skin and remove any signs of sun damage and ageing.

HOW ARE FACE OILS DIFFERENT FROM MOISTURIZERS?

They are very different. Facial oils are purely oil. Moisturizers like creams and lotions contain oil, water and other ingredients to help oil and water mix.

Oil-based products get along with skin easily because the skin’s outermost layers are also oil-based. Therefore facial oils are essential to help the skin barrier replenish and do its job. You are least likely to react badly to a facial oil compared to a moisturizer because facial oils are more natural. Also, unlike facial oils, moisturizers’ #1 job is to hydrate the skin not protect the skin.
